Jeff Goldsmith is an Associate Professor of Biostatistics at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and serves as Associate Director for Education at the Data Science Institute. He holds affiliations with the Foundations of Data Science and the Health Analytics Committee. Goldsmith earned his PhD in Biostatistics from Johns Hopkins University in 2012.
His research focuses on advancing functional data analysis methods to address complex datasets in neuroscience, environmental health, and wearable technology. Key areas include analyzing stroke patients' motor control patterns using high-frequency movement recordings, developing methodologies for accelerometer-based activity monitoring, and investigating environmental exposures like uranium and PCBs. His work bridges statistical innovation with clinical applications, particularly in understanding movement disorders and chronic disease risks.
Goldsmith has pioneered techniques for aligning daily activity patterns across subjects and improving dimension reduction approaches for longitudinal studies. His collaborations span neuroscientists, clinicians, and environmental epidemiologists, emphasizing interdisciplinary problem-solving. He actively contributes to public health data science education and has developed statistical software tools for functional data analysis.
His recent work explores the biological and predictive relevance of environmental exposure mixtures, leveraging advanced computational methods to uncover hidden patterns in complex datasets. He also investigates the societal impacts of air pollution disparities, particularly in marginalized communities, and evaluates interventions to improve health equity through data-driven strategies.
