Jeanette Covington is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago (1979). Her research focuses on the intersections of crime, race, and media, particularly how criminologists construct racial identities in their analyses of crime disparities and how these narratives permeate popular culture through Hollywood and media. She has authored the book Crime and Racial Constructions, which critiques how racialized images of criminality are perpetuated in academia and society.
Her earlier work includes studies on fear of crime, neighborhood change, and drug-related crime, with articles published in journals such as Social Problems, Sociological Quarterly, Urban Affairs Quarterly, and Criminology. Her research bridges sociological theory with empirical analysis, emphasizing critical perspectives on systemic inequality and media representation.
