Dr. Jeanette Cossar is an Associate Professor at the University of East Anglia's School of Social Work, affiliated with the Centre for Research on Children and Families and Child Protection & Family Support. She holds a BA (Hons) in Social and Political Sciences from Cambridge University, an MA in Philosophy (Fulbright Scholar at University of Memphis), and an MSc in Social Work from UEA. As Director of Learning and Teaching Quality, she teaches MA Social Work courses on relationship-based practice, organizational dynamics, and BA Social Work modules on social work skills and communication with children. Her research focuses on service user perspectives in welfare services, particularly children/young people's experiences of child protection and participation in decision-making processes. She pioneered participatory research methods involving young people in studies for the Office of the Children’s Commissioner.
Key research projects include investigating LGBTQ+ youth experiences in care systems, mentalization in social work education, and child protection process evaluations. She has led projects funded by ESRC, DfE, and the Nuffield Foundation. Notable outputs include analyses of serious case reviews and national surveys of local authority practices regarding LGBTQ+ youth. Her work emphasizes improving service accessibility, inclusive practices, and early intervention in child welfare systems.
