Jean Pouchelon is a Part-Time Professor in the School of Music at the University of Ottawa, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts. He holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from Université de Montréal and Université de Paris Ouest Nanterre (cotutelle), awarded in 2015. His research focuses on the music, dance, and poetic representations of the Afro-Maroccan Gnawa confraternity, blending ethnographic fieldwork in Morocco (2010–2012) with musical practice in both Gnawa and jazz traditions. He teaches courses such as MUS 2782 (Introduction aux Musiques du Monde) and MUS 2382 (Introduction to World Music).
Research Interests: Ethnomusicology, Moroccan cultural heritage, world music, and the intersection of music with social and spiritual practices. His book Les Gnawa du Maroc : intercesseurs de la différence (2019) explores these themes. Fieldwork included extensive study in Marrakesh (2010–2012) as part of his doctoral research.
