Rev. Jean-Pierre Ruiz is a Senior Research Fellow in Theology and Religious Studies at St. John's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, St. John's University. He holds a S.T.D. (Doctorate of Sacred Theology) from the Pontifical Gregorian University and a B.A. from Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception. His research focuses on biblical studies, particularly prophetic and apocalyptic literature, with an emphasis on the Bible’s relevance to contemporary issues like immigration and refugee crises. He is the author of Readings from the Edges: The Bible and People on the Move (2011), which won a Catholic Press Association Award.

Research & Engagement
Ruiz is a leading authority on the Apocalypse of John and contributes to major biblical resources like the New Oxford Annotated Bible. He has served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Hispanic/Latino Theology and holds editorial roles at the Journal of the American Academy of Religion and the Journal of Biblical Literature. He actively engages in interfaith dialogue, serving on the U.S. Department of State’s Religion and Foreign Policy Working Group and as a consultant for the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion.
Teaching
He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on biblical interpretation, social justice, and theology, including Core: Perspectives on Christianity and Seminar in Social Justice. His work bridges academia and public discourse through media appearances in English and Spanish, including contributions to Bill Moyers’ Genesis: A Living Conversation.
