Jean Pierre Mutanguha is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McGill University. Previously, he held positions as an Instructor at Princeton University, a Member/Visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics. He earned his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Arkansas (2020) under advisor Matt Clay and a BSc in Mathematics from Oklahoma Christian University (2014).
His research focuses on geometric group theory, particularly the dynamics of free group endomorphisms and their connections to geometric properties of mapping tori. Key interests include free-by-cyclic groups, hyperbolic geometry, and the interplay between algebraic structures and geometric invariants.
Recent work explores polynomial growth in free-by-cyclic groups and cubulation of hyperbolic-by-cyclic groups. His studies on limit trees and pretrees for free group automorphisms highlight the universality of geometric invariants. Collaborations with researchers like François Dahmani and Rachael Boyd have advanced understanding of minimal genus problems in right-angled Artin groups.
Dr. Mutanguha has organized workshops such as the AIM workshop on free-by-cyclic groups and delivered talks globally, including at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Princeton, and international conferences in Germany, France, and the UK. He is fluent in multiple languages (English, French, Kinyarwanda, Kiswahili) and skilled in software tools like Python and Sage.
