Jean Murley

Jean Murley is Professor of Liberal Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), specializing in true crime narratives, American popular culture, and ethical storytelling about crime/trauma. Previously held positions at Queensborough Community College (CUNY) and Columbia University.

Education:

• Ph.D. in English from City University of New York
• B.A. in English from Hunter College

Research Focus: Examines literary and cultural representations of murder in American popular culture, with works including The Rise of True Crime: 20th Century Murder and American Popular Culture (2008). Investigates ethical dimensions of crime narratives and trauma representation.

Teaching Expertise: Developed seminars on crime narrative ethics at Columbia University's MFA program. Coordinates public events featuring exonerees and justice advocates.

Honors: Edgar Allan Poe Award nominee (2009) for true crime scholarship. Received multiple PSC-CUNY research grants and teaching awards for pedagogical innovation.
