معرفی
Jean-Marie Grether has been Full Professor of Economics at the University of Neuchâtel, Institute for Economic Research, since 2000. He also supervises doctoral theses and acts as referee for leading journals in international and environmental economics.
Education:
- PhD in Economics, University of Geneva, Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences (1995)
- Master in Economics, University of Geneva (1988)
- Bachelor in Economics, University of Geneva (1987)
Research Interests:
Professor Grether’s work sits at the intersection of international trade, development economics and environmental economics. He investigates how globalisation affects the spatial distribution of production and pollution, the role of trade policy in climate change mitigation, and the long-run evolution of global economic inequality. His empirical analyses often rely on large micro-level datasets and innovative econometric techniques to uncover patterns in historical and contemporary emissions, productivity and trade flows.
Publication Trends:
Across more than three decades of research, Grether has produced a steady stream of publications that reveal two dominant themes: (i) the environmental consequences of international trade, including the “pollution terms of trade” and “pollution haven” hypotheses, and (ii) the historical and geographical dynamics of global economic activity, as captured by shifting centres of gravity of GDP and CO₂ emissions. Recent work extends these themes to European manufacturing imports, human-capital complementarities and Swiss firm-level productivity.
Teaching & Educational Innovation:
At the Bachelor level he teaches Introduction to Economics II and Sustainable Development Economics; at the Master level he offers Topics in Development Economics. He has also pioneered multimedia teaching tools and contributed to innovative first-year economics projects disseminated via YouTube.
