Dr. Jean Margaret Addington is Professor of Psychiatry at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, where she holds the Novartis Chair in Schizophrenia Research. She is also an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Arts, Department of Psychology, and is affiliated with multiple research institutes including the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute, and the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education.
Dr. Addington's primary research focuses on psychosis and the risk of developing psychosis, with three main areas: 1) examining young people at clinical high risk of developing psychosis to develop prediction models; 2) conducting clinical trials testing treatments that may prevent or delay psychosis onset; and 3) studying transdiagnostic staging models to identify youth at different risk stages for serious mental illness. Her work involves examining environmental, clinical, social risk factors, and biomarkers to predict who may be at risk and how best to intervene.
Her research has led to significant contributions in early psychosis intervention, including founding the Early Psychosis Program in Calgary and helping establish the Prevention through Risk Identification, Management and Prevention (PRIME) clinics in Calgary and Toronto. Current major projects include ProNET (Psychosis Risk Outcome Network), UPLIFT (a family intervention trial), The Stepped Care Project, and PROCAN (Canadian Psychiatric Risk and Outcome Study).

As Principal Investigator in all three phases of the NIMH-funded North American Prodromal Longitudinal Study (NAPLS-1, NAPLS-2, NAPLS-3) from 2005 to 2020, Dr. Addington has contributed significantly to understanding the predictors and mechanisms of transition to psychosis. Her research platform, the At-Risk for Mental Illness Research Clinic, continues to advance precision health approaches for youth mental health.
