Prof. Jean-Marc Dewaele is a globally recognized Professor of Applied Linguistics & Multilingualism at Birkbeck College, University of London, with a 30-year academic career. He also holds an Honorary Professorship at University College London since June 2023. His research focuses on multilingualism, language acquisition, and the role of emotion/personality in language use. He is affiliated with the Brussels Centre for Language Studies (BCLS) and has collaborated extensively with its team.
Education: VUB alumni, with undergraduate studies and doctoral training (late 1980s/early 1990s) under Prof. Hugo Baetens Beardsmore, a pioneer in multilingualism research.
Research interests include: multilingual language use, individual differences in language acquisition, and methodological innovations in applied linguistics. He has authored/co-authored over 220 journal articles, 100 book chapters, and influential textbooks like Questionnaires in Second Language Research and Emotions in Multiple Languages.
Awards:
- Ranked 15th most influential language scientist globally (Stanford 2022 rankings)

- Recipient of the 2022 European Second Language Association Distinguished Scholar Award
Contributions: Mentor to over 30 PhD students, guest-edited 9 journal issues, and served on editorial boards of top linguistics journals. Key collaborator with BCLS through co-edited works like Bilingualism – Beyond Basic Principles (2003).
Current Role: International Francqui Professor (2024-2025) at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, funded by the Belgian Science Policy Office.
