Professor Jean-Jacques E. Slotine holds dual professorships in Mechanical Engineering and Information Sciences, and Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is the Director of the Nonlinear Systems Laboratory and has been a faculty member since 1984. His academic background includes a Ph.D. from MIT in 1983, followed by research at Bell Labs. He has held invited professorships at institutions like the College de France, Ecole Polytechnique, and ETH Zurich.
Slotine’s research focuses on nonlinear systems analysis and control, with contributions to sliding control, adaptive robotics, contraction theory, and computational neuroscience. His work emphasizes practical tools for complex systems, including applications in machine learning and systems biology. He co-authored seminal textbooks Robot Analysis and Control (1986) and Applied Nonlinear Control (1991), and is a highly cited researcher in systems science and robotics.
His recent publications explore topics like neuron-astrocyte associative memory, quantum dynamics via classical action, and obstacle-avoidance algorithms. He has been recognized with the 2016 Rufus Oldenburger Medal and serves on advisory boards for institutions like the Italian Institute of Technology. His lab develops theories and applications for robust, adaptive systems in robotics, neuroscience, and control engineering.
