Jean Estebanez

Jean Estebanez serves as a Lecturer in human geography and teacher-researcher at Paris-Est Créteil University, specializing in human-animal relationships from a social science perspective. His academic work spans multiple research domains with geographical focus on France, India, and Tunisia.

His research develops in four complementary directions: the social dimension of global health issues (One Health), examining its genealogy and knowledge mobilization in zoonotic circulations; urban animal studies focusing on how cities produce and manage spaces with living things through eco-grazing and shared gardens; analysis of animal killing practices (MMA) through the ANIMORT project comparing professional practices in Tunis, Paris, and Pondicherry; and conceptualizing human-animal relationships through the lens of work.

Dr. Estebanez actively contributes to scientific governance as co-director of the 'Urban Natures' working group at Labex Futurs Urbains, member of the Île-de-France Regional Major Interest Domain 'One Health 2.0' scientific committee, and co-director of the journal Carnets de Géographes. He serves on multiple evaluation committees for academic journals and research funding bodies including ANR, DIM One Health, and international organizations.

His current research portfolio includes the MADATLAS project (2021-2025, €1.5 million funded by French Development Agency), Metropolitanization and reorganization of the workforce project (2021-2023), JUSTANIMA project on animal justice (2018-2022), and the ANIMORT project on animal killing practices (2020-2022). He regularly organizes and participates in international conferences including the 2024 colloquium on 'Human-Animal Relations: Same Diseases, Same Environment and Same Sensitivity' at ANSES-EnVA.
