Jean-Daniel Fekete

Jean-Daniel Fekete is a Senior Research Scientist (DR1) at INRIA, France, and the founder of the INRIA Project Team AVIZ (established in 2007). He earned his PhD in Computer Science in 1996 from Université Paris-Sud.

He held positions at the Graphic Design group at École des Mines de Nantes (1997–2001), where he served as leader from 2000–2001, followed by a year at the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory at the University of Maryland, USA. Recruited by INRIA in 2002 as a confirmed researcher, he advanced to Senior Research Scientist in 2006.

His research focuses on Visual Analytics, Information Visualization, and Human-Computer Interaction, with over 100 publications in top venues such as IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), InfoVis, EuroVis, CHI, and UIST. Notably, he was General Chair of the IEEE VIS Conference in 2014 (Paris), Associate Editor of TVCG, and held leadership roles in IEEE InfoVis (2011) and IEEE Pacific Visualization (2011).

He is a member of the IEEE Information Visualization Conference Steering Committee and the EG EuroVis Steering Committee. In 2015, he undertook sabbaticals at the Visualization and Computer Graphics group at NYU-Poly and the Visual Computing Group at Harvard. He also served as President of the French-Speaking HCI Association (AFIHM) until 2013.
