Professor Jean Chmielewski holds the Alice Watson Kramer Distinguished Professorship in Chemistry at Purdue University since 2006, also serving as Professor of Biomedical Engineering since 2009. With a PhD from Columbia University (1988) and BS from Saint Joseph's University (1983), their research spans peptide-based materials, antimicrobial agents, and drug delivery systems targeting multidrug-resistant bacteria. Notable work includes collagen mimetic peptides for regenerative medicine and P-glycoprotein inhibitors to combat HIV drug resistance.
- Education: PhD in Chemistry (Columbia University, 1988), BS in Chemistry (Saint Joseph's University, 1983)
Research focuses on supramolecular assemblies, antibacterial peptides, and overcoming multidrug resistance mechanisms. Innovations include cationic amphiphilic polyproline helices (CAPHs) for targeting intracellular pathogens and metal-ion mediated peptide scaffolds for drug delivery. Over 50 awards recognize their contributions to science and education, including the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award (2003) and multiple teaching honors from Purdue's College of Science.
Publications emphasize peptide nanotube design, biofilm disruption strategies, and ABC transporter modulation. Their educational initiatives include curriculum reforms for life-science students, integrating physical and biological sciences through competency-based learning frameworks.
