Dr. Jaya G Yodh is a Teaching Professor and Associate Head in the Department of Biomedical and Translational Sciences at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She holds a B.A. in Biology from Cornell University (1987) and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Johns Hopkins University (1993), with postdoctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Arizona State University (1993–1997). Her professional journey includes roles at Midwestern University (1997–2006) and UIUC’s School of MCB/Department of Physics (2006–present). She directed the NSF-funded Center for the Physics of Living Cells’ education initiatives (2008–2017), overseeing programs like the Physics of Living Cells Summer School.
Research & Teaching: Dr. Yodh specializes in medical education innovation, particularly integrating foundational sciences with clinical practice, engineering, and social sciences. Her work includes curricular design for Problem-Based Learning (PBL), USMLE Step 1 preparation, and interdisciplinary biophysics education. She also investigates DNA repair enzymology and chromatin dynamics using single-molecule techniques.
Awards & Service: Recognized with the 2022 IAMSE Early Career Award and 2019 ABE Scholar Award, she serves on committees for ABE, IAMSE, and AAMC. She chairs the CI MED Academic Promotion and Tenure Committee and contributes to diversity initiatives like the UIUC Gender Equity Council.
Key Contributions: Over 50 peer-reviewed articles, including studies on Bloom helicase’s role in G-quadruplex unfolding and nucleosome dynamics. She leads multi-institutional projects to develop clinical-relevance tools for health professions education.
