Jay Zarnetske is an Assistant Professor of Hydrological Sciences at Michigan State University (MSU) in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, College of Natural Science. He is affiliated with the Zarnetske Watershed Science & Hydroecology Lab, which explores hydroecological processes in watersheds globally.
- Education
- PhD in Water Resource Science, Oregon State University
- MS in Watershed Science, Utah State University
- BA in Geology, Colby College
His research focuses on the interplay between hydrology and ecosystems, particularly groundwater-surface water interactions, nutrient cycling in Arctic and permafrost-affected catchments, and the biogeochemical impacts of climate change. Projects include studying hyporheic zone dynamics, riverine nitrogen cycling, and Arctic watershed responses to climate warming.
Key collaborations span institutions like Yale, Oregon State, University of Vermont, and international organizations such as the Leverhulme Trust, National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research (New Zealand), and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research. Funding sources include the National Science Foundation, USGS, and the Leverhulme Trust.
Scientific recognition includes:
- NSF CAREER Award
- Gaylord Donnelly Environmental Postdoctoral Fellowship
- NSF IGERT Fellowship
Zarnetske's lab emphasizes diversity, equity, and inclusion while engaging in public outreach through initiatives like Arctic community visits, children's books, and climate science education for high school students.
