معرفی
Jay Thomas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Syracuse University. His research focuses on experimental petrology and geochemistry, particularly on understanding metamorphic processes, high-pressure mineral reactions, and thermobarometric techniques. He leads the Experimental Geochemistry Lab, equipped with advanced facilities for high-pressure/temperature experiments and analytical tools like electron microprobe and FTIR spectroscopy. His work integrates laboratory studies with field investigations to unravel Earth's geological processes.
- Education: Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from Virginia Tech (2003), M.S. (1998), B.A. (1995)
Research interests include: petrology of metamorphic and igneous rocks, experimental determination of phase equilibria, and application of trace element and isotopic techniques. Recent studies explore garnet growth mechanisms, quartz inclusion thermobarometry, and fluid-rock interactions. He has secured multiple NSF grants for collaborative projects on metamorphic processes and thermobarometric calibration.
Teaching includes courses in mineralogy, geochemistry, and advanced seminars. Professional service includes roles as Director of Undergraduate Studies and peer review for top journals like Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology.
Labs/Teams: Experimental Geochemistry Lab (Syracuse), collaborations with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and international institutions.
