Jay Stern serves as an Assistant Professor II in the Department of Media Arts at Rider University, where his academic focus centers on Film and Television. He maintains an active creative practice as a filmmaker and theater director.
His educational background includes a PhD in Media Philosophy from the European Graduate School, a BA in Writing from Columbia University, and a Certificate of Filmmaking from Vancouver Film School. He has studied with prominent figures including Terry Southern, Peter Greenaway, and Jacques Derrida.
Professor Stern's creative research encompasses film production and theater direction. He has directed four feature films and over 30 short films, with his latest feature Dead Storage currently in development. His theatrical work spans new and classical productions across New York, Chicago, Italy, and Greece.
He is the founder of the Iron Mule Short Comedy Screening Series (running monthly since April 2002) and the World Wide Lab, an international festival developed at the Watermill Center. Stern is also a member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab.
