Jay Porter is an Associate Dean for Engineering at Texas A&M University Galveston and a Professor in the Department of Engineering Technology and Industrial Distribution, specializing in Electronic Systems Engineering Technology. He holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Physics from Texas A&M University. His research focuses on analog and RF electronics, instrumentation, virtual instrumentation, mixed-signal integrated circuits, and magnetic resonance imaging. He directs the Multidisciplinary Engineering program at Galveston and has contributed to initiatives like the STRATA-1 public-private-academic partnership for undergraduate research.
Porter has received notable awards, including the Eugene Webb Faculty Fellow Service Award (2016) and ASEE Gulf Southwest recognition for student paper awards (2015–2014). His work emphasizes experiential learning through IoT integration, capstone projects, and collaborative platforms like eSMART. He has advised numerous capstone teams on NASA projects, such as the Wireless Smart Plug and Deep Space Habitat designs. His educational innovations include modular laboratory curricula and the Product Innovation Cellar resource for engineering technology programs.
Porter’s publications span over three decades, addressing topics like embedded systems education, STEM outreach, and Six Sigma principles. His research bridges academia and industry, with a focus on preparing students for evolving workforce needs through multidisciplinary approaches. He actively contributes to engineering education through conference presentations, curriculum development, and leadership in academic partnerships.
