Dr. Jay L. Hess serves as Executive Vice President for University Clinical Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine at Indiana University. He is also the Director of the Indiana Statewide Medical Education System and holds the Walter J. Daly Professorship. As a faculty member, he is Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, Professor of Medicine, and Adjunct Professor in the School of Public Health. Dr. Hess joined Indiana University School of Medicine in 2013 as its 10th dean, overseeing the largest medical school in the United States with nine campuses, more than 2,000 students, and nearly 7,200 faculty members.
Dr. Hess's educational background includes:
- MD and PhD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
- Residency in anatomic pathology and fellowships in hematopathology and surgical pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital
- Certificate in business administration from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania
- Master's degree in health services administration from the University of Michigan School of Public Health
Dr. Hess's research primarily focuses on leukemia, particularly the role of HOXA9 transcription factor in leukemogenesis. His work spans molecular pathways in acute myeloid leukemia, epigenetic regulation, and potential therapeutic targets. Beyond laboratory research, he has made significant contributions to medical education, ethics education, and health services administration. His leadership has overseen a 125 percent increase in research funding from the National Institutes of Health and led comprehensive curriculum reform at IU School of Medicine.
Dr. Hess's scholarly output demonstrates interdisciplinary reach across hematology/oncology, medical education, and ethics. His recent publications include research on polygenic resilience in schizophrenia, innovations in regional medical education, and transformations in ethics education. His work consistently bridges basic science with clinical applications and educational innovation.
As a leader, Dr. Hess has spearheaded numerous initiatives including:
- Implementing a single curriculum with interprofessional education across all campuses
- Moving over 65 independent physician groups into a single faculty practice (IU Health Physicians)
- Securing Comprehensive status for the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center
- Raising over $1.7 billion as part of the Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign
- Developing institution-wide strategic plans in 2014, 2018, and 2022
