Jay Irizawa is an Assistant Professor at OCAD University in Toronto, Canada, teaching Advertising, Environmental Design, and Graphic Design. He serves as the acting interim Graduate Program Director for the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Art, Media and Design. His interdisciplinary practice investigates ancestral knowledges through inter-dimensional models of digital and physical environments, critically engaging with mediated landscapes from an anti-oppressive perspective.
Research focuses on virtual/mixed reality, metaverse development, and human-computer interaction, with emphasis on hyper-connected environments integrating physical and digital spaces. His studio methodology prioritizes 'making thinking happen' through unbound processes, shaping possible futures via theoretical and practical design explorations. Recent work addresses metaverse 'disconnects' through extended reality frameworks and IoT integration.
Award highlights include the Alfred T. Vivash Bursary for International Graduate Studies in Design (2017) and multiple Event Design Awards for Best Trade Show Environment (2007, 2012). Additional recognition spans the Design Exchange Award for Cadillac Experience interior design (2006), TIFF sponsorship Gold (2009), and PROMO! Award for Best awareness campaign (2009).
As core faculty in the Adaptive Context Environments (ACE) Lab, Irizawa develops public installations like 'Shadow!' at the Bentway (2018) and 'Diagrams of Power' at OCAD University's Onsite Gallery (2018). These projects examine power structures through data visualization and interactive design, often in collaboration with Public Visualization Studios.
