Professor Jay Gopalakrishnan is a leading researcher in neural development and disease, currently affiliated with the Institute of Human Genetics at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Previously at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, he leads the Laboratory for Centrosome and Cytoskeleton Biology (CCB), pioneering innovative approaches to study brain development and disease using advanced organoid technology.
Dr. Gopalakrishnan's research focuses on the critical role of centrosomes and cilia as molecular switches in neural stem cell homeostasis. His laboratory has pioneered the generation of self-organizing 3D human brain organoids to investigate brain development, cell physiology, and tumorigenesis. Recent breakthroughs include the development of "Hi-Q Brain Organoids" - a new class of stress-free brain organoids that solve inherent problems of traditional organoids such as heterogeneity, poor reproducibility, and scalability issues.
His work bridges basic research with translational applications, particularly in understanding glioma development and creating platforms for high-throughput drug screening. The laboratory's research has significant implications for personalized glioma medicine through invasion assays and has received substantial funding including the DFG Research Unit FOR5547 focused on "Deciphering the Role of Primary Ciliary Dynamics in Tissue Organization and Function."
Professor Gopalakrishnan has received recognition through multiple publications in high-impact journals including Nature Communications, Cell Stem Cell, and EMBO Journal. His research has been instrumental in advancing organoid cultivation technologies for disease modeling and therapeutic development.
The CCB laboratory actively trains the next generation of scientists, with ongoing Post-doc, Ph.D., and TA positions available. The team employs cutting-edge techniques including high-resolution imaging, next-generation sequencing, multi-omics approaches, and advanced organoid culturing systems to dissect cilia/centrosome biology in human brain development and glioblastoma pathogenesis.
