Dr. Jay D. Harmon is an Associate Dean for Extension Programs and Outreach and Director of Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension at Iowa State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He has led these roles since 2017, overseeing 10 Plan of Work teams, 43 field specialists, and over 100 faculty/staff. As a Professor of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, his research focuses on ventilation, air quality, facility design, and swine industry challenges. He teaches courses in wood structures, capstone design, and animal facilities.

Dr. Harmon’s work emphasizes practical solutions for agricultural challenges, including disaster-resilient structures and energy conservation.
He has authored over 100 publications, with recent focus on swine heat management, mobile air filter testing, and thermal environment monitoring. Awards include Fellow status in the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and induction into the Rural Builders Hall of Fame.
Dr. Harmon oversees Iowa State’s Extension and Outreach programs, collaborating with key personnel such as Jamie Benning and Traci Knight. His administrative and academic roles aim to bridge research, education, and community engagement in agriculture.
