Javier Serrano Puche

Javier Serrano Puche is Associate Professor of Journalism and Vice Dean of Faculty at the School of Communication, University of Navarra, where he is also affiliated with the Department of Public Communication. He conducts research within the Digital News Media Research Group and co-leads the Journalism, Political Communication and Democracy (PerComPolDem) research group. He has been a Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics (LSE) under the José Castillejo Program.

His research focuses on media trust, digital misinformation, news consumption, emotional dynamics in the public sphere, and digital literacy. He employs both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, often using large datasets such as the Digital News Report and Edelman Trust Barometer. His work explores how ideology, platform affordances, and political discourse shape public perceptions of journalism and trust in media.

His recent publications analyze disinformation in Southern Europe, fact-checking effectiveness, politainment on YouTube, and the role of emotions in news avoidance. He has developed comparative frameworks for digital literacy and examined audience perceptions of journalistic roles in fictional media like The Newsroom.

He has been awarded two six-year research periods (2007–2012, 2013–2018) by the Spanish National Evaluation Commission for Research Activity (CNEAI), recognizing sustained research excellence. He serves on the editorial boards of Communication & Society, Studies in Media and Communication, and Review of Communication Research, and is a member of the Spanish Society of Journalism (SEP) and the Spanish Association for Communication Research (AE-IC).
