Javier Ignacio Valdés Torres is a PhD candidate in Law at Queen Mary University of London and an Instructor Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Chile. His research focuses on the normalization of states of exception in Chile, analyzing their evolution from temporary crisis tools to near-permanent governance mechanisms. He holds a Master’s in Public Law (summa cum laude, 2023) and a Bachelor of Legal and Social Sciences (first class, 2017), both from the University of Chile.
Previously, he served as a Constitutional and Legal Advisor to the Chilean Government and the Constitutional Convention, contributing to new constitutional provisions on social development, indigenous rights, and security. His teaching roles include instructorships in Moral Philosophy, Logic of Norms, and Constitutional Law at leading Chilean universities.
Valdés Torres has published extensively in legal journals and co-authored books on administrative law, social rights, and constitutional theory. His work engages with thinkers like Carl Schmitt and Giorgio Agamben to critique democratic erosion under emergency powers. He has presented at global conferences, including the Critical Legal Conference in Lund (2024) and the VII Chilean Philosophy Congress (2021).
He is funded by prestigious scholarships (Becas Chile, HSS) and actively contributes to projects like the Non-Human Rights Database (Human Rights Law Centre) and the Laboratory of Constituent Conflicts. Beyond academia, he enjoys science fiction, diverse music, and role-playing games.
