Javier Gutierrez Carou

Javier Gutierrez Carou is a Professor at the Department of Classical, French and Italian Philology, affiliated with the Faculty of Philology at the University of Santiago de Compostela. He holds doctorates from both the University of Santiago de Compostela (1995) and the University of Salamanca (2021). His research focuses on Italian Philology, with notable contributions to the study of Dante's influence on 15th-century Castilian poetry and critical editions of Carlo Gozzi's works. He is part of the Humanities Research Institute (iHUS) and the research groups 'Calderon' and 'Italianistics'.

Education:

• PhD in Italian Philology, University of Santiago de Compostela (1995), thesis: The influence of the 'Divine Comedy' on the Castilian poetry of the 15th century (supervised by María Isabel González Fernández).
• Second PhD in Italian Philology, University of Salamanca (2021), thesis: La malia della voce di Carlo Gozzi: critical edition and study (supervised by Vicente González Martín).

Research interests emphasize medieval and Renaissance literary exchanges, textual criticism, and the cultural intersections between Italian and Iberian literatures. His work bridges philological analysis with historical contextualization, particularly in early modern European poetry.
