Dr. Javier Fernández García serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at IQS School of Engineering, Universitat Ramon Llull, where he has been employed since 2021. He leads the GESPA (Environmental Process Engineering and Simulation Group), a multidisciplinary research team recognized by the Generalitat de Catalunya (2021 SGR 00321) that combines chemical engineering, biotechnology, and chemical analysis to advance environmental sustainability.
Dr. Fernández García earned his Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Oviedo (2002-2007), followed by a Master in Process and Environmental Engineering from the same institution (2010-2011). He completed additional studies in Industrial Chemistry at the Polytechnic University of Gijón (2011-2013) and earned his PhD through the European LOWCARB Project (2011-2014). His professional journey includes industry experience as a Process Engineer at Saint-Gobain, XSTRATA, and Biogas Fuel Cell SA (2008-2011), research positions at University of Warwick (2014-2016) and Monash University (2015), and academic appointments at University of Leeds (2017-2018) and University College London (2018-2021).
His research program focuses on catalysis, chemical reactors, CO2 capture using radiofrequency heating technology, photocatalytic materials for wastewater treatment, and circular economy approaches for waste management. Dr. Fernández García's work bridges theoretical modeling with experimental validation to develop practical solutions for environmental challenges, with particular emphasis on sustainable chemical processes and environmental protection.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong concentration on advanced materials for environmental applications, particularly ZnO-based heterostructures and layered double hydroxides for pollutant degradation. His work spans multiple disciplines including chemical engineering, material science, and environmental technology, with growing emphasis on circular economy principles and CO2 management technologies.
- Beatriu de Pinós postdoctoral fellowship (2021)
- h-index of 16 with 37 scientific publications
- Multiple papers featured in high-impact journals with significant citation counts
As principal investigator, Dr. Fernández García manages several major research projects including RE(F)CYCLE (fluorinated gases recovery), MAGIC3RF (CO2 capture and conversion), and CAPTAPUR (high-purity CO2 capture equipment). He mentors graduate students through the FPU-2021 program and supervises multiple doctoral candidates. His research has attracted substantial funding from the Agència de Gestió d'Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca (AGAUR) and other sources.
The GESPA research group under Dr. Fernández García's leadership develops integrated solutions for environmental challenges, combining theoretical and experimental approaches to advance sustainable technologies. Current projects focus on radiofrequency-heated CO2 capture systems, photocatalytic materials for wastewater treatment, and circular economy approaches for industrial waste management, with strong emphasis on practical implementation and industrial collaboration.
