Jason Zheng Jiang serves as Professor of Dynamics and Control at the University of Bristol within the School of Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering. He holds an EPSRC Research Fellowship and leads the Vibration Suppression Research Unit in the Dynamics and Control Research Group, maintaining an international reputation in network synthesis and mechanical system optimization.
His academic journey includes BSc and MSc degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University followed by a PhD from the University of Cambridge (2010). Career progression shows appointment as Lecturer at Bristol in 2013, promotion to Senior Lecturer in 2018, and advancement to Professor in 2021.
Professor Jiang's research centers on vibration suppression and control systems with emphasis on inerter-based technologies. His work bridges theoretical network synthesis with practical applications across automotive, railway, wind energy, and civil engineering sectors. Key innovations include passive-active-combined suspension designs and interlinked vibration absorbers that achieve significant performance enhancements in mechanical systems while reducing operational costs and environmental impact.
Analysis of his recent publications (2022-2025) reveals dominant trends in inerter-based vibration control, reduced-order modeling for nonlinear structures, and optimization of multi-domain systems. These works consistently address real-world engineering challenges through graph-based methodologies, hydraulic implementations, and experimental validation across transportation and energy infrastructure.
His distinguished recognition includes:
- IMechE Best Paper Award
- EPSRC Research Fellowship
Professor Jiang has secured £20M+ in research funding with over £3.5M as principal investigator from Research Councils and industry partners. His projects demonstrate exceptional industrial relevance including the BEIS-funded 20MW Wind Turbine Drivetrain project and Network Rail's iPanto initiative for railway electrification, delivering step-change performance improvements across multiple engineering sectors.
He leads the Vibration Suppression Research Unit within the Dynamics and Control Research Group, directing experimental facilities for system identification and vibration control. Current focus areas include inerter-integrated pantograph systems for railways, wind turbine drivetrain optimization, and automotive suspension technologies with active industry partnerships spanning global automotive manufacturers, rail infrastructure providers, and renewable energy companies.
