Dr. Jason W. Smith serves as Assistant Professor of Religion in the Department of Religion at Mercer University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, appointed in 2022.
His academic credentials include a Th.D. and M.T.S. from Harvard Divinity School and a B.A. from St. Olaf College.
Specializing in premodern South Asian religious texts and their reception, Dr. Smith examines how audiences engage with literature like the Tirukkural to construct Tamil religious identity. His current book project “A Text for All Times: The Tirukkural and the Construction of Tamil Religion” analyzes this dynamic across historical periods, while ongoing work includes translating the Tirukkural with medieval commentaries and co-editing Tamil literary classics from the Cankam corpus to modern innovations.
