Jason Shearn is an Associate Professor and Graduate Recruitment Director in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, College of Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics (2002) and M.S. in Engineering Mechanics (1998) from the University of Cincinnati, and a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering (1996) from Wright State University.
His research focuses on improving functional outcomes in soft tissue repairs (tendon and ligament) through biomechanical analysis and tissue-engineered constructs. Key interests include understanding in vivo tissue environments, mechanical stimulation of engineered tissues, and developing surgical techniques for orthopedic applications.
His publications emphasize biomechanical testing, tissue engineering applications, and clinical translations in orthopedics, with recent work exploring robotic simulations, genetic models of healing, and graft material efficacy.
Scientific Awards:
- Kappa Delta Ann Doner Vaughn Award (2007)
- University Research Council Summer Fellowship (1997)
- Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society (1995)
He has advised doctoral and master's students on projects ranging from murine tendon healing to ACL reconstruction biomechanics. Major grants include NIH R01 awards totaling over $6 million for research on tendon repair and ACL reconstruction.
Dr. Shearn collaborates with the Orthopaedic Research Laboratory and directs projects involving large animal models, robotic testing systems, and tissue-engineered construct development.
