Jason Gilmore is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication & Media at Utah State University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences. His research focuses on global communication, national identity, and intercultural discourse, particularly the rhetoric of American exceptionalism and presidential communication.
His educational background includes a PhD in Global Communication from the University of Washington (2013), an MSS in International Studies from the University of Colorado at Denver (2007), and a BA in the same field from the same institution (1999).
Dr. Gilmore’s research explores how public discourse shapes perceptions of national identity, human difference, and international relations. He investigates the cognitive and attitudinal impacts of presidential rhetoric, especially in the context of American exceptionalism, and how such discourse influences public opinion and diplomacy. His work spans political communication, media studies, and cultural analysis.
The 15 most recent publications show a consistent focus on presidential discourse, American identity, and global communication, with increasing attention to comparative and international contexts. His scholarship combines rhetorical analysis, media studies, and political psychology, often examining the intersection of leadership, media, and public perception. Collaborations with scholars like C.M. Rowling and P. Sheets reflect a strong interdisciplinary network.
His scientific awards include:
- College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean’s Giraffe Award for innovation and risk taking
- USU President's Faculty Diversity Award
- Third place award for radio series by the Society of Professional Journalists, Utah Chapter
- First place award for radio series by the Society of Professional Journalists, Utah Chapter
Dr. Gilmore actively mentors students, having advised Lauren Mata and Jarlin De León on public lectures and research projects. He has led experiential learning programs in Brazil and collaborated with Utah Public Radio on award-winning series examining civil rights and Brazilian culture. While no formal lab or research team is mentioned, his work involves student collaboration, public media production, and interdisciplinary research. He has secured recognition through teaching, research, and community engagement grants, particularly in diversity and inclusion initiatives.
