Jason D. Haugen is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Oberlin College since 2009, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. He specializes in linguistic anthropology and the Uto-Aztecan language family, particularly Hiaki (Yaqui). His work bridges linguistic theory, historical linguistics, and cultural prehistory of the southwestern U.S. and northwestern Mexico.
- Education: PhD (2004), MA (2000) University of Arizona; BA (1997) University of Texas at Austin
Research focuses on morphology-phonology-syntax interfaces, Uto-Aztecan comparative linguistics, and Indigenous language revitalization. He co-authored The Routledge Handbook of North American Languages (2020) and published in Linguistic Inquiry and International Journal of American Linguistics.
Teaches courses including Fundamentals of Linguistics, Syntax, and Native Languages of the Americas. Advised Zoe Swann ’19 in neuroscience/linguistics. Active in professional societies like SSILA and LSA.
Labs/Teams: Engages in collaborative Indigenous language research projects.
