His research focuses on applying computer science methodologies to economic systems, particularly in mechanism design and approximation theory. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Washington and has held positions at Microsoft Research and Carnegie Mellon University. Hartline's work bridges algorithmic design and economic theory, emphasizing the use of approximation to analyze complex systems. He has led NSF-funded research initiatives, including the Institute for Data, Econometrics, Algorithms, and Learning (IDEAL). His teaching includes courses on algorithms, online markets, and mechanism design. Hartline advises current students such as Anant Shah and Yifan Wu and has mentored former students who now hold academic and industry roles.
