Professor Jarmo Hietala is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Turku's Faculty of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at the same institution. A Specialist in Psychiatry with MD and PhD qualifications, he maintains active clinical and research roles focused on psychotic disorders.
His research program centers on the etiology and treatment of psychotic disorders through clinical neuroscience, neuroimaging, and genetic approaches. Key investigations include polygenic risk in schizophrenia, suicidality mechanisms, childhood adversity impacts on mental health, antipsychotic medication effects, and transdiagnostic brain signatures. This work consistently integrates biological, environmental, and clinical perspectives.
Recent 2025 publications reveal strong trends in collaborative, data-driven psychiatry: eight of ten papers involve international consortia (PRONIA, SUPER), six utilize advanced neuroimaging, and four incorporate genetic analyses. The research spans biomarker development (BMIgap, structural covariance networks), pharmacogenetics (CYP2D6), and sex-specific immune profiling (C4 gene), demonstrating methodological innovation.
Professor Hietala maintains active grant funding through major projects like the Finnish SUPER study and PRONIA Consortium. His supervision likely involves PhD and Master's students in psychiatry and clinical neuroscience, with opportunities for international collaboration and access to longitudinal population datasets.
