Janis Antonovics is a Research Professor of Biology at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on the evolution and epidemiology of infectious diseases in natural populations, particularly using plant models like anther smut. He retired from teaching eight years ago and now collaborates with labs globally, including those at the Free University of Berlin, the University of Maryland, and Amherst College. His work bridges theoretical modeling and empirical studies, addressing questions about disease transmission, host-pathogen coevolution, and species range limits.
Education: B.A., Cambridge University (1963); Ph.D., University of Wales (1966). His research integrates datasets from organisms ranging from bumblebees to humans, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. He has been funded by NIH, NSF, and the Humboldt Foundation.
