Janine Silga

Dr. Janine Silga is an Assistant Professor in European Union Law at Dublin City University's School of Law and Government, part of the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences. She holds administrative roles including Chair for the BA Joint Honours (First Year) and School Ethics Convenor (Law). Her PhD from the European University Institute (Florence) focused on the migration-development nexus in EU policy. Her research emphasizes EU migration law, refugee law, development policy, and critical race theory. She has held postdoctoral positions at the University of Luxembourg and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.

Her research explores EU migration policies, human rights in asylum contexts, and the legal dimensions of migration-development linkages. Recent publications analyze asylum application interpretations, refugee family rights, and vulnerable migrants’ access to social assistance.

Publications often critique systemic gaps in EU asylum frameworks and advocate for rights-based approaches. She co-authored analyses on the EU’s 2020 migration pact and the erosion of asylum rights during the pandemic.

Her ongoing projects include examining EU anti-discrimination law’s role in migration and asylum contexts. She actively engages with NGOs and policy institutions, bridging academic and practical legal discourse.
