Janine Brodie is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta and holds the Canada Research Chair in Political Economy and Social Governance. She earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from Carleton University in 1981 and has held prestigious positions at Queen's University, York University, and the University of Western Ontario. Her career includes leadership roles as Chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta (1997–2004), inaugural Director of the York Centre for Feminist Research (or York Centre for Research on Women), and John Robarts Chair in Canadian Studies.
Dr. Brodie's research critically examines core challenges in Canadian politics and public policy, including citizenship, gender equality, political representation, social policy, globalization, and contemporary governance transformations. Her work explores the effects of neoliberal governing practices on social citizenship, national governance, and democratic citizenship in the context of continentalization and globalization. She has authored or co-authored eight books, edited or co-edited three others, and contributed approximately seventy book chapters.
Notable scientific awards include her election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2002 and her Canada Research Chair (2010). She co-edits Critical Concepts, a widely adopted political science textbook now in its fourth edition. Dr. Brodie's current research focuses on anti-poverty strategies and challenges to democratic citizenship under globalized governance frameworks.
