Janice E. Thies is a Professor in the School of Integrative Plant Science (Soil and Crop Sciences Section) at Cornell University. She specializes in soil ecology, focusing on soil biological quality assessment, remediation, and sustainable agricultural practices. Her work includes international collaborations, particularly in Latin America and Asia, and she has led initiatives such as the Cornell Cooperative Extension Soil Health Program and the S-1022 Regional Project.
Dr. Thies holds a Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of Hawaii (1990) and has been recognized with prestigious fellowships from the American Society of Agronomy and Soil Science Society of America. Her research integrates cutting-edge molecular methods with field studies, emphasizing biochar applications, microbial interactions, and soil health indicators.
Her recent work explores biochar's effects on soil biota, climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration, and regenerative agricultural practices. Key contributions include studies on plant-microbe communication, decomposition dynamics of transgenic crops, and soil health assessments in diverse agroecosystems.
Awards include the 2016 ASA and SSSA Fellowships and the 2007 Atkinson Center International Professorship. She serves as an associate editor for the Soil Science Society of America Journal and has advised numerous students through courses like PLSCI 6660 (Applied Plant-Microbe Interactions).
Her outreach efforts span global development, with projects in Honduras and Kenya focusing on sustainable soil management and smallholder farmer support. Current research emphasizes regenerative soil systems, microbial resilience under climate change, and innovative soil health monitoring tools.
