Janet Oseguera Valencia

Dr. Janet Oseguera Valencia serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Humanities and Communication at California State University, Monterey Bay's College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. A proud CSUMB alumna who graduated from the same department, she recently earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership and has returned to contribute her expertise to the institution she calls home.

Dr. Oseguera Valencia's research and teaching focus on Educational Leadership, Human Communication, and Chicanx/Latinx Studies, with particular emphasis on work-life justice for Latina educational leaders. Her dissertation 'And Still, I Rise: Madre Poderosas in the Pursuit of Work-Life Justice in Educational Leadership Roles' explores the intersection of cultural identity, family responsibilities, and professional advancement for Latina school administrators. She also authored 'Baila Conmigo: Mentoring Latinas as School Leaders' which addresses culturally responsive mentoring approaches.

Originally from San Jose, California, Dr. Oseguera Valencia has strong local roots, having attended elementary school in Monterey County (Cesar Chavez Elementary in Salinas for 5th and 6th grades), El Sausal Middle School, and Alisal High School. Her connection to the Central Coast community extends beyond academics—she played college basketball for CSUMB during her undergraduate studies.

As an educator, Dr. Oseguera Valencia teaches across the Humanities and Communication curriculum, from foundational courses like HCOM 110 Fundamental Speaking & Listening to specialized upper-division courses including HCOM 365 Chicanx/Latinx History and HCOM 475 Ethnic and Gender Studies Capstone. Her teaching philosophy reflects her commitment to social justice and student empowerment, encapsulated in her motto 'Si se puede!'
