Janet E. Childerhose

Dr. Janet E. Childerhose is a Research Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. Her work focuses on medical anthropology and bioethics, with a particular emphasis on mixed-methods research addressing overdose prevention, opioid prescribing practices, and chronic pain management in sickle cell disease patients. She leads or co-leads several federally funded initiatives, including the Stay Safe Study on fentanyl test strip implementation and the OHiO project optimizing HEALing Communities interventions.

Education includes a PhD in Medical Anthropology from McGill University, postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and the University of Michigan, and prior degrees from the University of Toronto and University of Waterloo.

Her research investigates ethical dilemmas in healthcare delivery, including provider navigation of opioid prescribing and shared decision-making with sickle cell patients. Current projects explore fentanyl/xylazine test strip usability, overdose risk reduction behaviors among drug users, and mindfulness-based pain management apps for sickle cell patients.

Dr. Childerhose has secured funding from NIH NIDA, SAMHSA, and Ohio State's Society of Fellows. Her recent work bridges public health interventions with library systems, exploring community responses to the opioid epidemic. She collaborates across disciplines, involving clinicians, librarians, and community organizations in translational research efforts.
