Janet Dwyer

Janet Dwyer is a Professor of Rural Policy at the University of Gloucestershire and the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (Kyoto, Japan). With over 30 years in applied rural research, her work focuses on sustainable agriculture, EU/UK rural policy evaluation, and institutional adaptation. She holds a PhD in Agricultural Economics (University of Wales, 1990) and an MA in Biological Sciences (University of Cambridge, 1985).

Her research spans policy analysis for the European Commission, Defra, and NGOs, including leadership of the EU-funded 'Satoyama reconnections' project (2024–2028). She advises UK government bodies like Defra's Rural Academic Panel and chairs policy groups such as the Nutrient Management Expert Group (2021–22). Professional roles include Director of Rural England CIC, Trustee of the Organic Research Centre, and Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Societies.

Key achievements include influencing agri-environmental policies across Europe and being awarded an OBE (2022) for services to rural research. Her recent work explores cultural landscapes, upland farming efficiency, and climate-resilient rural development strategies.
