Dr Jane Roper is a Professor of Academic Programmes and Doctoral Supervisor at the Royal College of Music (RCM), specialising in 19th- and 20th-century music history with a focus on Hungarian composers such as Gyula Káldy, Carl Goldmark, Jeno Hubay, and György Ligeti. She holds a PhD from King's College London and Leipzig University (2004), with additional studies in Hungarian Language and Culture at the University of Pécs. Her research includes translating Ligeti-Seiber correspondence (2007), analyzing Ligeti's Violin Concerto (2014), and publishing on Goldmark's works. She also researches British music education, particularly the Schools' Music Association of Great Britain's archives, and is authoring a related book.
Teaching at RCM, she supervises doctoral students on Hungarian topics and performs with the New English Concert Orchestra. Her publications span prefaces for musical scores (e.g., Hubay's opera), conference papers, and articles exploring exoticism in Goldmark's overtures. She actively engages in music education outreach through RCM Sparks initiatives.
