Jane Murphy is an Associate Professor and Chair of the History Department at Colorado College, where she has taught since 2007. Her expertise spans Middle Eastern history from the rise of Islam to the present, alongside topics in European and Islamic science. She holds a BA from Yale University (1995), an MA from Princeton University (2001), and a PhD in the History of Science (2006) from Princeton, focusing on the intellectual and social role of sciences in 18th-century Cairene religious scholars' works.
Research Interests: Murphy's research bridges the history of science, religion, and society in the Islamic world. Her work examines how scientific knowledge intersected with religious scholarship in premodern Egypt, contributing to broader discussions on the global history of science. Publications appear in journals of the American and British History of Science Societies.
Teaching: She teaches courses such as 'Magic, Science, and Religion in the Mediterranean,' 'Formation of Islamic Societies,' and 'The Modern Middle East.'
Leadership: As Department Chair, Murphy oversees the History Department's academic programs and curricular initiatives.
