Dr. Jane Masseglia is an Associate Professor of Ancient History at the University of Leicester, affiliated with the School of Archaeology and Ancient History. She joined the university in 2016 after eight years at Oxford, where she held roles as a lecturer and postdoc on major research projects such as the ERC-funded Emotions Project: The Greek Paradigm and the AHRC-funded Ashmolean Latin Inscriptions Project (AshLI). Until 2022, she served as Senior Scientist for the ERC-funded LatinNow Project, overseeing its Public Engagement and Knowledge Exchange initiatives, including the acclaimed VOCES POPVLI exhibition.
Her research focuses on reconstructing the lives of ordinary people in antiquity through textual and visual evidence, with particular emphasis on Greek and Roman Turkey (excavations at Pessinus and Çadır Höyük) and the Roman villa at Ketton (Trojan War mosaic). She integrates material culture studies with historical analysis to explore societal dynamics. As a former PGCE-qualified teacher, she actively engages in public outreach, delivering lectures and developing educational resources for schools and communities.
Dr. Masseglia was elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 2020 and promoted to Associate Professor in 2022. She currently leads the Director of Distance Learning Transformation initiative, modernizing undergraduate programs for digital-era learning.
