Jane MacMorran serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Appalachian Studies within East Tennessee State University's School of Humanities and Social Sciences. She concurrently directs the interdisciplinary Appalachian, Scottish, Irish Studies Program and coordinates all graduate studies for the department.
Her research centers on Appalachian cultural heritage with specialized focus on transnational connections to Scottish and Irish traditions. This manifests through analysis of migration patterns, folk music evolution (particularly Bluegrass and Old-Time genres), material culture preservation, and oral history documentation. The work integrates community-based research with academic scholarship to examine identity formation in Appalachian communities.
As Graduate Studies Coordinator, Dr. MacMorran oversees the Master's in Appalachian Studies and dual Graduate Certificate programs. She facilitates student access to the department's extensive institutional resources including the Archives of Appalachia's 10+ million-item collection and the B. Carroll Reece Museum's artifact holdings. Her leadership connects academic training with practical heritage interpretation skills through partnerships with regional museums and cultural organizations.
