Jane M. Carlton is the Director of the Malaria Research Institute and a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She holds joint appointments in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology and the Whiting School of Engineering’s Department of Biomedical Engineering. Previously, she was a professor at New York University, where she led an NIH-funded International Center of Excellence for Malaria Research in India.

Dr. Carlton’s research centers on genomics and multi-omics approaches to study parasites causing major global health diseases, particularly malaria (Plasmodium spp.) and the sexually transmitted parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Her work integrates comparative genomics, bioinformatics, population genetics, and molecular biology to understand parasite biology, evolution, and host interactions. She has led landmark genome sequencing projects for Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. yoelii, and T. vaginalis.
Her recent publications span malaria genomics in Ethiopia and India, diagnostic development, parasite evolution, and urban microbiome studies. The articles highlight trends in genomic surveillance, drug resistance detection, long-read sequencing, and the integration of field epidemiology with molecular tools.

Dr. Carlton has advised numerous PhD and Master’s students and led large collaborative research projects across India and Ethiopia. Her lab has received continuous funding from NIH and other sources, supporting research on malaria epidemiology, parasite genomics, and diagnostic innovation. She collaborates with clinicians, field teams, and public health officials to translate genomic findings into actionable public health strategies.
Her lab, the Carlton Lab, is actively engaged in projects including genomic surveillance of malaria in travelers, characterization of the pseudocyst stage of T. vaginalis, and generating FAIR datasets for neglected parasites. The team employs cutting-edge sequencing technologies from Illumina and Oxford Nanopore.
