Jane Batcheller is a Professor in the Department of Human Ecology at the University of Alberta, affiliated with the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. She serves as Principal Investigator of the Protective Clothing and Equipment Research Facility (PCERF) and oversees the Textile Analysis Service (TAS), established in 1970. Her research focuses on three core areas: protective clothing design, textile analysis and preservation, and archaeological textile studies. She holds a PhD and MA in Textile Archaeology from the University of Manchester.
Teaching responsibilities include courses such as HECOL 270 (Applications of Textile Science), HECOL 370 (Quality Assurance for Textiles), and HECOL 476/576 (Textile Analysis and Care). She has supervised numerous graduate students, including Elena Kosareva (PhD) and Bronwyn Bates (MSc). Her work has been recognized with the J. William Weaver Paper of the Year Award (2016).
Research highlights include studies on graphene-based sensors for fire-protective fabrics, thermal protection assessment, and historical textile preservation. TAS provides textile testing, educational resources, and employs students part-time.
