Prof. Jan van Tartwijk is a Professor of Educational Sciences at Utrecht University's Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences and currently serves as Vice-Dean for Master's program oversight. He previously directed the Graduate School of Teaching (GST) from 2014–2024 and led the Educational Consultancy and Training group (2010–2018). His research focuses on teacher-student relationships, professional development, and educational equity, with recent emphasis on socio-cultural disparities impacting schooling. Van Tartwijk has held visiting professorships at the University of Konstanz (2017–2019) and collaborated nationally/internationally on teacher education policies.
Education includes a PhD in Educational Sciences from Utrecht University (1993), postdoctoral work at Curtin University (1993–1994), and extensive roles in educational consulting and research since the 1990s. He is a member of numerous academic boards, including the Interuniversity Committee for Teacher Training and the CITO Institute for Educational Measurement.
Research interests span teacher expertise development, classroom management's interpersonal dynamics, and curriculum innovation. Key themes include adaptive expertise, programmatic assessment, and the interplay between formal and informal learning environments.
