Jan Vermeiren is an Associate Professor in Modern German History at the University of East Anglia (UEA), serving as Director of the Institute for the Study of Ideas of Europe (ISIE). He holds a PhD from UCL and has taught at institutions including UCL and the University of Essex. His research focuses on German nationalism, the First World War, the Habsburg Monarchy, and European integration. He directs the International Encyclopaedia of Ideas of Europe and co-edits History: The Journal of the Historical Association. He has authored a monograph on German-Austrian wartime solidarity and edited several volumes on European intellectual history.
Education: Studied at Humboldt University of Berlin, Free University of Berlin, and University College London (UCL), culminating in a PhD at UCL's Centre for European Studies.
Research interests include geopolitical thought, the Weimar Republic, Third Reich, and GDR. His work bridges national histories with transnational European frameworks. Recent publications explore Ludendorff's legacy and European conflict dynamics from 1710 to 1960.
Awards include the British Academy Rising Star Engagement Award (2018) and Marie Curie Doctoral Fellowship (2004–2007). He has supervised over 20 graduate theses on topics ranging from Napoleonic era identities to Brexit's historical context. Active in academic leadership, he previously directed UEA's Postgraduate Taught Studies in History and serves on editorial boards for leading journals.
Led projects like Lifting the Fog: Visions and Ideas of Europe in Britain (British Academy, 2018–2019). His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals by analyzing historical conflicts and integration processes relevant to contemporary peacebuilding and cultural understanding.
