Dr. Jan Valgaeren is a University Lecturer at Tilburg University’s Liberal Arts and Sciences program within the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences. He holds a PhD in Roman Law (2012) and concurrently practices law at Du Mongh Lawyers in Belgium while maintaining ties to the art world via Art Gallery The Mijlpaal. His expertise spans International Relations, Roman Law, Legal History, and Art Law. He teaches courses on European issues, business law, and research methodologies.
Valgaeren’s research focuses on Roman legal institutions, particularly pontifical jurisdiction in antiquity, and the legal dimensions of looted art during WWII. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary legal frameworks. He actively participates in academic networks, serving as Treasurer of the University Colleges Academics Network Netherlands (UCANN).
He has published three major works: a doctoral thesis on Roman pontifical law, a chapter on 4th-century BC legal reforms, and an article on WWII art restitution. His external roles include guest lectures and legal practice, reflecting his interdisciplinary engagement with law, history, and cultural heritage.
